Many courses are pick-and-choose libraries, allowing teachers to select lessons based on student need. Other courses (such as bigrams and common words) are taught as progressive sequences.

 Yes.
The programme is grounded in research showing that writing by hand supports reading, spelling, vocabulary development, punctuation, and writing fluency. Correct formation and repeated, meaningful practice are central to every lesson.

 Yes.

 Yes.
Many schools use:

  • Teacher subscriptions for classroom teaching
  • Student subscriptions for targeted intervention or home support

Relief teachers do not need their own subscription if lessons are already available and set up by the classroom teacher.

No.
Some courses are libraries (choose what you need), while others are designed as sequences. You can always pause, repeat, or skip lessons based on progress.

Most teachers use The Write Lesson:

  • Daily , or
  • 3–4 times per week for consistency and fluency.

No.
Left-handed students learn the same letter shapes and patterns. What differs is hand position, paper angle, and posture, which teachers and parents can easily adjust.

 Left-handed students should:

  • Tilt the paper slightly to the right
  • Keep the wrist below the writing line
  • Sit with their body angled slightly left of centre

This helps reduce smudging and improves visibility of the letters as they are formed.

For NZ students we recommend the following:

Year 0/Year 1/Year 2: 1F2

Year 3: 1I5

Year 4+: 1B5/1B8

We do not recommend books with dotted lines in the middle.

The Write Lesson is designed as a coherent, whole-school approach to handwriting and writing development. Research shows that students benefit most when handwriting instruction is consistent from the start, using the same letter formation, stroke direction, and expectations over time.

For this reason, The Write Lesson is aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum and is intended to be used from the junior years onwards, so students “start as they mean to go on.” Mixing handwriting programmes can create confusion for learners and slow progress.

If your school is reviewing or transitioning its handwriting approach, we’re happy to support you with guidance on implementation and alignment.
